For Zotter Schokoladen we were traveling in Peru. In an area that until recently was a no-go zone. It was the territory of the coca farmers who grew coca here for the drug mafia.
Den Menschen bescherte Koka ein ansehnliches Einkommenr. Der Geldsegen hatte aber einen entscheidenden Nachteil: es gab keine Sicherheit, Mord und Todschlag standen auf der Tagesordnung.
Eventually the farmers had enough. After all, no amount of money helps when you're dead. The Peruvian government also wanted to get rid of the bad image and declared the war on drugs. Coca fields were tracked down and destroyed.
Alternatives were sought. One of them was cocoa. And here Zotter Schokoladen came into play . Always on the lookout for something special and high quality, a rich field of activity was found here. Zotter was able to convince the farmers to experiment with him on cocoa cultivation. At eye level, as equal partners and in a lively exchange of information.
Wie immer bei Filmen über Kakao für Zotter gab es auch in Peru kein Drehbuch. Wir wollten ehrlich bleiben, eine Doku machen und keinen Imagefilm inszenieren. Wir hatten zwar eine Reiseroute, wussten ungefähr an welchem Tag wir an welchem Ort sein würden, aber wir wussten nicht mal am Morgen, was tagsüber passieren würde. Das Drehbuch schrieb also der Zufall oder unsere peruanischen Gastgeber, ganz wie man es sieht. Die Ungeplantheit hat natürlich seinen eigenen Reiz, ist aber auf Dauer enorm kraftraubend. Zwei Wochen lang tagsüber auf jede Situation gefasst zu sein und den Finger am Auslöser bereit zu haben und dann noch die halbe Nacht Daten zu sichern – das geht schon ein wenig an die Substanz.
But the result proved us right. It has become an inartificial portrait of the Zotter family and their always good-humored Peruvian hosts. Colorful, like the traditional costumes of the Peruvians - which, by the way, they don't just wear for tourists. In order to give the film a little more realism and as a sign of respect for the people of Peru, we didn't dub the protagonists with polished German professionals, but instead used South American native speakers. In our opinion, theis coloring of the language fits harmoniously into the picture of one of the most beautiful countries we have ever visited.
What would a movie be without a theme song? Klaus Kobald worked hard and together with the Colombian singer Jessi Ann de Angelo created a catchy tune.
